Wholitarian™ Lifestyle

Wholitarian™ is a term I’ve created to describe a healthy nutrition lifestyle made up primarily of real, whole foods that are nutrient-dense, minimally processed, plant-based and as close as possible to their original state when first harvested. These kinds of foods are delicious, convenient, earth-friendly, and can help your body achieve optimal health.

Go Plant Based
  • Eat mostly plants for optimal health and longevity (ideally about 80%).
  • If you prefer to include meat and dairy in your diet, limit to about 20% of your total calories and choose local and organic when possible.

  • What does 20% of your total calories look like? No need to count! Just take a look at your plate at each meal. If about ¾ of it is made up of plant foods, you’re on your way.

Live Nutrient-Dense

Focus on foods that are nutrient-dense, or packed with many healthful micronutrients per calorie, i.e., beans, vegetables, fruits, nuts & seeds. In other words, the opposite of nutrient-poor “empty calories” like those found in white bread and soda. Nutrient density is the cornerstone of health and wellness. When you live nutrient-dense, your nourished body functions at its peak and you look & feel amazing.

Choose Whole Foods

Go back to the basics. Eat foods that are minimally processed, or as close as possible to their original state when harvested. As good rule of thumb – avoid foods with ingredients you can’t pronounce.

Hydrate Smart

Wean your palate away from sweetened beverages and hydrate your body without adding extra calories. Water wins!

Practice Mindfulness

Know where your food comes from and be mindful and comfortable with the food choices you make. Connect with the sources of your food. If you eat animal products, choose those that were humanely raised.

Strive for balance

Limit sugar, sweeteners & processed foods in your diet as a general rule. But give yourself permission to happily indulge in favorite treats from time to time that feed your soul in other ways. Food plays a central role in so many parts of life – cultural, traditional, social, emotional… A healthy balance also includes embracing that and sometimes enjoying less-than-healthy foods if they make you happy, feel celebratory or remind you of a happy memory.

Share the joy

Celebrate family, friends & relationships through food. Prioritize family meals. Eat with others – screens away, seated at a table, present in the moment. Delight in the delicious and nourishing foods that fuel your health and leave behind the fad diets, food shaming, deprivation and denial that sabotage your progress.
