Healthy Twist Apple Crisp
Whenever we go apple picking in the fall, this recipe for Healthy Twist Apple Crisp is the first thing my kids wants to make with our freshly picked apple haul.
Try this new twist on an old classic which uses fresh, nutrient-dense ingredients that offer plenty of fiber, flavor, texture, and lots of vitamins and minerals.

Healthy Twist Apple Crisp

Ingredients
- 8 medium apples (cored and sliced)
- 1/4 cup maple syrup
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch
- 2 tablespoons lemon juice (freshly squeezed)
- 2 teaspoons cinnamon
- 1 cup old-fashioned oats
- 1 cup walnut meal
- 1/2 cup brown sugar (packed)
- 3 tablespoons butter (melted)
- 3 tablespoons creme fraiche or plain Greek yogurt
- 1/2 teaspoon Kosher salt
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Lightly butter a 9x13 inch baking pan*.
- Combine the maple syrup, cornstarch, lemon juice and 1 teaspoon of the cinnamon in a large bowl and whisk together until smooth. Add the apples and toss until well coated.
- In a medium bowl, combine the oats, walnut meal, brown sugar, the remainder of the cinnamon and the salt and stir with a fork or whisk until well mixed. Pour the melted butter and creme fraiche or yogurt on top and combine until the mixture is slightly moistened throughout.
- Pour apples into the baking pan and spread the oat mixture evenly over the top.
- Bake for 45 minutes or until apples are bubbly and oat topping is lightly browned. Cool for 10 minutes or so before serving. Can be served hot or cold.
